Roosevelt’s aims

• To bring about ‘relief, recovery and reform’

• To bring relief to the poverty-stricken

• To take America out of the Depression

• To use the full power of the federal government in tackling the Depression

• To bring about the recovery by rebuilding of the American economy

• To help the unemployed by getting Americans back to work

• To re-build the economy both in agriculture and industry and

• To bring stability to the banking system

• He wanted to protect Americans’ savings and property

• To introduce reforms that would create a fairer and more just society

• To improve working conditions and pay for the employed

• To end child labour

• But Roosevelt was not a revolutionary, he wanted to save capitalism, and save America, from anarchy
