The Treaty of Versailles and the importance of context

  • It had been a long war and very costly in lives

  • It had been fought in the West largely on French soil

  • There was enough evidence to point to German blame

  • Germany had now invaded France twice in a little over forty years, and France had lost Alsace-Lorraine to them

  • And Germany certainly committed atrocities throughout the war

  • But anti-German propaganda was also used by both the French and the British to maintain their war effort

  • And in democracies no politician could let Germany off lightly (votes depended on them being punished)
