The Treaty of Versailles and the importance of context
It had been a long war and very costly in lives
It had been fought in the West largely on French soil
There was enough evidence to point to German blame
Germany had now invaded France twice in a little over forty years, and France had lost Alsace-Lorraine to them
And Germany certainly committed atrocities throughout the war
But anti-German propaganda was also used by both the French and the British to maintain their war effort
And in democracies no politician could let Germany off lightly (votes depended on them being punished)
